TELETEXT from ERT

Striving for the state-of-the-art television services, the Greek Public  Television ERT s.a. has recently started Teletext services. Thus, after the  implementation of digital technology in the production and distribution field,  the transmission in Wide Screen Format 16:9 (Pal Plus), from June 1996 ERT  transmits Teletext in the First, Second and Third State Channel.

The hardware and software used for Teletext production and transmission are  based on the most modern technology, supporting FASTEXT, TOP & FLOF, Program  Delivery Control (PDC), DATABROADCASTING, PACKET 8/30, whereas data acquisition  from remote sources envisage the use of ISDN and the data ASTET GATEWAY.

Transmission is mainly in Greek, with a few pages in English according the  Regulatory directives of EBU. The Greek character set is an International  prototype and it was designed by the Directorate of Technical Services of ERT in  collaboration with the Hellenic Standards Organisation (ELOT) and the Ministry  of Education in 1988-89.

The first test transmissions were possible on November 1995 and on June 1996,  ERT started the first in Greece Teletext transmission covering the whole country  (complete geographical and population coverage) and the satellite network. Since  then, the number of transmitted pages haw reached the number 1200 and there is a  constant effort for development and growth. These pages cover a gamut of  interests while most of them are updated on a 24 hour basis.

The topics covered today are Coastal, Air and Road transportation, Theatres  and Cinemas, the Athens Concert Hall (OMMA) and the National Music Theatre  (Ethniki Lyriki Skini), Hospitals and Pharmacies, TV and Radio programmes, Book  presentation, M.O.T. schedule, Winter ski centres, sport results etc., while in  the immediate future there will be news coverage (political, financial, sports  and meteorological) with the reliability and the quality characterising the  services offered by ERT.
